How To Track Where Your Leads Came From (WordPress)

The Digital Transparency Problem: Where Did That Lead Come From?

Most website and business owners invest in multiple marketing channels to drive enquiries, such as:

  • Organic SEO traffic from Google
  • Paid Google Ads campaigns
  • Facebook and Instagram promotions
  • LinkedIn outreach
  • EDMs and email marketing
  • Direct traffic from referrals or word of mouth

The problem is that one of the biggest issues in digital marketing today is transparency.

When a form submission comes through, it’s often unclear exactly where that lead originated.

Was it from your SEO campaign?
A Google Ads click?
A Facebook post?
That email newsletter you sent last week?

Out of the box, WordPress provides little to no support for tracking lead sources accurately. Unless you have:

  • A custom-built tracking script
  • A CRM with deep website integration
  • Advanced analytics setups

…you’re often left guessing.

And even with those systems, attribution is rarely 100% accurate.

Why Tracking Lead Sources Matters

Having better digital transparency gives business owners and agencies a much clearer understanding of what’s actually working.

When you know where each lead came from organic search, paid ads, social media, email campaigns, or referrals you unlock deeper insights like:

  • Which channels generate the best quality enquiries
  • What marketing spend is producing real results
  • Which campaigns should be scaled up or adjusted
  • Better reporting between agencies and clients
  • More informed conversations around ROI

For digital service providers and agencies like us, this kind of transparency is critical. It allows us to move beyond vague metrics and focus on what matters most: real leads and real outcomes.

Introducing Lead Sources: A Scalable WordPress Solution (Plugin)

Over the past few months, we’ve been working on a scalable solution for WordPress and now, it’s here.

Introducing Lead Sources, our new WordPress plugin built specifically to solve this problem.

Each time a contact form is submitted, Lead Sources automatically records the original traffic source, such as:

  • Google (organic)
  • Direct traffic
  • Facebook
  • Google Ads
  • LinkedIn
  • Email marketing campaigns

The plugin then displays this information clearly at the top of the form notification as:

Traffic Source: Google (Organic)
or
Traffic Source: Facebook Ads

This means no more guessing, no more assumptions, just instant clarity.
